To prevent impurity of the surface of water stone with particles of removed metal, Nagura has long been used.
This is a compact pebble, with a lower grain size than that used for sharpening itself.
Its role is to accelerate the formation of suspended matter from water, and abrasive grains detached during operation.
This slurry helps to reduce contamination, and the sliding of the knife becomes smoother.
The presence of grinding micro particles in the resulting composition also accelerates sharpening.
A few Nagura wires along the working plane are enough to get the desired result.
Two essential grits:
5000 — Applies to all types of whetstones up to and including this marking
12000 — For the rest, finishing thin abrasives up to 12 thousand grit
Below 1000, you can not use Nagura, because there is an intensive removal of steel, for example, when restoring the cutting edge after damage.
Dry before storage and store until next use at moderate temperature and humidity.
